What does your business do?

We’re a business membership organisation centred on business representing the interests of more than 700 organisations across Liverpool.

When was your business established?

We were established in 1850 so next year represents our 170th birthday

What qualities are needed to become the leaser of a business?

The ability to multi-task, stay as organised as possible and be resilient. Leading a business is exhilarating, stressful, empowering and frustrating – very often on the same day! Dedication to the cause of your business is, in my opinion, critical to maximising the ability to lead and communicating that dedication through words and action.

What is the key skill running an independent business?

If you could go back to the day you began your career and give yourself a piece of advice, what would it be? Take the time to enjoy the successes a little more and be prepared for my career to not go as I expected.

How do you feel the growth of the independent business community has contributed to the economy of the Liverpool City Region?

It’s really important to the City Region that we have a diverse mix of businesses to build resilience in the economy, create jobs and increase our innovation. Over 98% of our 46,000 businesses are SMEs – it is where the bulk of our talent is employed and where the major growth over the coming period will be. It’s been integral to the renaissance our region has experienced and will continue to be in the coming decade.

Are you a member of any business organisations / boards outside of your usual role?

I am on the BID Company Executive Board, City Council Skills & Employability sub-committee as Advisory Member, LEP Professional Business Services board, Liverpool Hope Business School Advisory Board amongst others.

What do you do in your own time when you’re not working?

My two kids are 5 years and 14 months old so non-work time is pretty much all about them!
